Most vehicles still use hydraulic power steering and rely on a supply hose and return hose for the pump. While these hoses usually last the life cycle of the vehicle, they can still fail and start to leak. If you think you have a power steering fluid leak, check the hoses and hose clamps first.
In most cases, a power steering fluid leak will be originating at a hose or hose clamp. If you know what your various automotive fluids should look, feel and smell like, it's easy to identify the leak. Power steering fluid should be almost clear with a light, oily consistency and a slight burnt-marshmallow odor. If in doubt, spray the whole unit with brake cleaner to get rid of any residual fluid that may have leaked out, then check again later to isolate the leak. Of course, we have the power steering hoses you need for whatever you drive!
